What is the difference between PrestaShop 8 and 9?

Short answer: PrestaShop 8 is the safer maintenance generation for existing shops. PrestaShop 9 is the modernization generation: newer Symfony, newer PHP support, a stronger Admin API direction, and a front office moving toward Hummingbird instead of the old Classic-first ecosystem. What PrestaShop versions do your modules support?

Our modules are tested against PrestaShop 1.6, 1.7, 8.x and 9.x. Most modules in the catalogue ship a single ZIP that detects the host version at install time and loads the right code path, so the same purchase works whether you upgrade from 1.7 to 8.1 next month or from 8.1 to 9.0 next year. What "supported" means in practice: We run regression tests on a fresh install of each major version before every release. Bug reports against any of those versions are handled under the same support policy — no "sorry, that version is too old". A few legacy modules are 1.7+ only because the underlying PrestaShop API didn't exist in 1.6; this is noted on the product page. If you're still on 1.5 or earlier, the safer route is to upgrade PrestaShop first — we don't backport to unmaintained cores.

Should I upgrade from PrestaShop 1.7 to 8.x or 9.x?

It depends on your situation. If your store is running well on 1.7 and all your modules are compatible, there is no urgent need to upgrade — 1.7 still receives security patches. However, PrestaShop 8.x and 9.x bring real improvements: better performance, Symfony 6.4 under the hood, and improved admin interface. The upgrade process is not trivial — it requires careful planning, module compatibility checking, and thorough testing on a staging copy. Do not upgrade production without testing first. What happens to tracking data if I uninstall the module?

Uninstalling removes the tracking log table and platform configuration from your database. Historical data already sent to Google Analytics, Meta, etc. remains in those platforms — uninstalling the module does not delete data from external services. If you plan to reinstall later, export your platform configuration first (pixel IDs, API keys) so you do not need to look them up again. What PHP version does PrestaShop 9 require?

PrestaShop 9 requires PHP 8.1 as the absolute minimum, but the official PrestaShop documentation now lists PHP 8.2, 8.3, 8.4 and 8.5 as fully supported, with PHP 8.5 recommended for new installs. PHP 8.0 and earlier will refuse to install. PHP 8.6 is not yet supported. If you are migrating from PrestaShop 1.7 or 8.x, you will almost always have to upgrade PHP at the same time, because PS 1.7 typically ran on PHP 7.x. Before flipping the PHP version on your hosting: Check that every installed module declares compatibility with PHP 8.2+. Many older third-party modules still use PHP 7-era syntax (curly-brace array access, each(), implicit nullables) and will throw fatal errors on PHP 8.2 or higher. Test your theme: deprecated Smarty plugins and old create_function() calls fail on modern PHP. Increase memory_limit to at least 512 MB — PS 9 raised the recommended PHP memory baseline from 256 MB (PS 8 era) to 512 MB. How do I find out which PrestaShop version I am running?

The PrestaShop version is shown in the top-left corner of any back office page, next to the PrestaShop logo. For a much more detailed view, open Configure → Advanced Parameters → Information. Do I need to use Google Tag Manager, or can I use GA4 directly?

You can use either approach, or both. If you prefer Google Tag Manager, enable the GTM platform and enter your container ID — all ecommerce events will be pushed to the dataLayer in GA4 Enhanced Ecommerce format. If you prefer direct GA4 tracking without GTM, enable the GA4 platform and enter your Measurement ID. How do I clear PrestaShop cache properly?

Go to Advanced Parameters → Performance and click "Clear cache". This clears Smarty compiled templates and Symfony cache. For a more thorough clear: also delete the contents of /var/cache/ manually (both prod and dev folders). If you are using OPcache, you may also need to restart PHP-FPM or Apache to clear the opcode cache. Simply clearing the PrestaShop cache does not clear OPcache. How do I enable debug mode in PrestaShop?

Edit the file /config/defines.inc.php in your PrestaShop root directory. Find the line define('_PS_MODE_DEV_', false); and change false to true. Save the file and reload the page. You will now see detailed PHP errors instead of blank pages or generic error messages. Can performance debugging be limited?

Yes. Debug panel settings include enablement, allowed IP addresses, allowed employee IDs, and a profiler panel option that can be restricted to logged-in employees.

My module upload fails with "file too large" — what do I do?

This is a server-side PHP limitation, not a module issue. Your hosting provider has set a low value for upload_max_filesize or post_max_size in php.ini. Contact your host and ask them to increase both values to at least 32MB. Alternatively, you can upload the module via FTP: extract the ZIP and upload the module folder to /modules/ on your server, then install it from the back office. What hosting do you recommend for PrestaShop?

For small to medium stores: any decent shared hosting with PHP 8.1+, MySQL 5.7+, and at least 256MB PHP memory limit. For larger stores (1000+ products, high traffic): a VPS or dedicated server with SSD storage, Redis for caching, and OPcache enabled. Avoid ultra-cheap hosting that oversells resources.
